{"id":2321,"date":"2019-07-30T06:45:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T06:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/?p=2321"},"modified":"2019-07-30T06:45:48","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T06:45:48","slug":"jp-reviews-he-4-she-project-with-chiefs-in-ka-25-girls-rescued-from-the-jaws-of-early-marriages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/index.php\/jp-reviews-he-4-she-project-with-chiefs-in-ka-25-girls-rescued-from-the-jaws-of-early-marriages\/","title":{"rendered":"JP reviews HE 4 SHE project with chiefs in KA: 25 girls rescued from the \u201cjaws\u201d of early marriages"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Jordan Simeon-Phiri*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barely a year after Justice and Peace (JP) of The\nDiocese of Karonga launched the HE4SHE project in Karonga District, where\nParamount Chief Kyungu was chosen the district\u2019s UN Women HE4SHE ambassador, the\norganization on Thursday engaged group village heads to review progress of the\nproject at a meeting that took place at Karonga Museum Amphitheatre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at the event, Traditional Authority (TA) Kilupula,\nwho stood in for Paramount Chief Kyungu, said the district has made strides\nthrough various interventions such as formation of HE4SHE clubs in primary\nschools, abolition of harmful cultural practices such as <em>chithola minga <\/em>and <em>kupimbira<\/em>\nand reinforcement of the existing bylaws to bring to book perpetrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince last year July, as chiefs we have done a lot to\ncurb gender based violence (GBV) related cases. For example, we have rescued many\ngirls from the jaws of early marriages and have gone back to school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have also abolished harmful cultural practices\nthat fuel GBV related cases like traditional dances that are performed at night\nand advised parents to send their girls to school and not rush them into early\nmarriages,\u201d Kilupula said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kilupula, however, urged JP to carry out massive civic\neducation in the district to sensitize members of the community if the project\nis to continue bearing fruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further warned traditional leaders and some family\nmembers who shield perpetrators of GBV from facing the law, saying the tendency\nobstructs justice and fuels the malpractice to escalate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking her turn, Principal Group Village Head Mponela\nfrom Senior Chief Wasambo hailed the project, saying since July last year, they\nhave rescued 25 primary school girls from early marriages and have since written\nthe 2019 Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JP Project Coordinator Moses Mwakisalu said as an\norganization, they are happy with strides made so far as chiefs have taken a\nholistic approach to end GBV in Karonga through various interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six TAs and 60 group village head persons attended the\nmeeting.
