{"id":2472,"date":"2019-09-11T18:55:49","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T18:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/?p=2472"},"modified":"2019-09-11T18:55:49","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T18:55:49","slug":"no-food-no-education-lusubilo-promoting-education-through-school-feeding-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/index.php\/no-food-no-education-lusubilo-promoting-education-through-school-feeding-program\/","title":{"rendered":"No Food No Education: Lusubilo&#8217;s School Feeding Programme Promoting Education"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Tilekeni Kaunda<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lusubilo Community Based Programmes in partnership\nwith Catholic Relief Services has been implementing school feeding program in\nKaronga Diocese through HOPE Project with support from Coppel Family in Mexico.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is supporting 43 primary schools, 3 secondary schools and 315 Community Based Child Care Centres (CBCCs) with <em>Likuni Phala<\/em> flour for porridge preparation. This year the project has reached out to more than 20,000 children with the provision of <em>Likuni Phala<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/school-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"School Feeding Programme keeping children in school\" class=\"wp-image-2474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/school-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/school-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/school-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/school-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/school-2.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>School Feeding Programme keeping children in school<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The project comes in to curb the challenges that\nfamilies face in sending children to school. Before the project, children would\nnot go to school consistently because of lack of food in their homes or, sadly,\nthey would go to school on empty stomach.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Lusubilo started the program, there have been many\npositive outcomes in the supported schools. According to head teachers, the\nprogram has improved performance of learners since most of them don\u2019t miss\nclasses. Furthermore, it has increased learners\u2019 retention at school. The\nprovision of porridge at school has also reduced dropout rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from improving nutrition and health, the project\nhas also increased access to, and achievement in, education. It is also acting as\nan incentive for parents to consistently send their children to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a similar program, Lusubilo also collaborates with\nKaronga Diocese\u2019 Sunday School feeding intervention, which reaches to 28,992 children\nin a year in all parishes of Karonga Diocese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lusubilo is also working with these families, through\nits Sustainable Options Recommended for Testing program, in empowering them to\ncultivate enough food for their families.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Tilekeni Kaunda Lusubilo Community Based Programmes in partnership with Catholic Relief Services has been implementing school feeding program in Karonga Diocese through HOPE Project with support from Coppel Family in Mexico.
