{"id":2608,"date":"2019-11-15T06:22:25","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T06:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/?p=2608"},"modified":"2019-11-15T06:22:25","modified_gmt":"2019-11-15T06:22:25","slug":"communities-in-chisankhwa-take-initiative-to-construct-colbelt-pit-latrines-for-the-elderly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/index.php\/communities-in-chisankhwa-take-initiative-to-construct-colbelt-pit-latrines-for-the-elderly\/","title":{"rendered":"Communities in Chisankhwa Take Initiative to Construct Colbelt Pit Latrines for the Elderly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Leah Nyondo <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communities\nof James and Ngulumbi villages in Chisankhwa have identified two vulnerable\nhouseholds whom they will assist in constructing a colbelt pit latrine, under\nthe WASH project funded by Cross Catholic Outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karonga\nDiocese, through the Development Desk, is promoting the use of colbelt pit\nlatrines because they use locally available resources, hence affordable.\nConstruction does not require the use of wood as it the case with pit latrines\nbeing used in the area making them environmental friendly. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthis exercise, communities were asked to provide food for the local artisans\n(sanitation entrepreneurs), bricks, water and all other unskilled labour. This\nexercise is being carried out as one way of fulfilling one of the principles of\nCatholic Social Teaching, \u201clove for the poor\u201d and is expected to spread to all\nareas in the project impact area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\nmodern toilets will also serve as demonstration for local communities to see\nand easily adopt for use in their households. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One\nof the beneficiaries, an elderly woman named Nambene, said her son used to\nconstruct shallow pit latrines which could not last two years. She hailed the\ninitiative since colbelt toilets last a longer time before another one is\nneeded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis initiative reminds\nme of our olden days when communities could come together to assist the elderly\nand underprivileged members of the society. I used to believe that this\ncommunity spirit is far gone until today,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nproject, which also has a spiritual component, aims at letting the poor feel\nthe love of God by taking up small initiatives within the community\u2019s capacity\nfor people to feel the love of God through charity works. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not\nonly is the project providing development work, we must understand the project\nis under the Church.
