{"id":2619,"date":"2019-11-19T11:31:11","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T11:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/?p=2619"},"modified":"2019-11-19T11:31:11","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T11:31:11","slug":"farmers-in-chitipa-hail-collective-marketing-introduced-by-karonga-diocese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/index.php\/farmers-in-chitipa-hail-collective-marketing-introduced-by-karonga-diocese\/","title":{"rendered":"Farmers in Chitipa Hail Collective Marketing Introduced by Karonga Diocese"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Saloom Longwe <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ownex Mwamphashi aged 38, living with a family of 7 members\nincluding his wife and 5 children, hails from Mugalure Village, T\/A Mwabulambia\nin Chitipa district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mwamphashi is one among several farmers enjoying the fruits\nof joining Farmer\u2019s Club which later turn to operate in Collective Marketing\nwith many other farmer clubs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2019, Karonga Diocese through its Development Desk\ninitiated collective marketing which aimed at bringing farmers together for collective\nbargaining power when buying agricultural inputs and selling agricultural\nproduce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2019, Mwamphashi managed to buy a motorbike from\nthe proceeds of crop sales. With the aid of collective marketing, he sold about\n2,800 kilograms of surplus maize at a price of MK270 per kilogram against a\nprevailing market price of which is below MK200 per kilogram. The total revenue\nhe realized was MK756,000 to which he added some money raised from livestock\nsales to get MK800,000, which was the cost price of the motorbike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mwamphashi is now living a happily life having acquired a means\nof transport which will ease mobility as he is comes from a typical remote area\nwhere transport is one of their major challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family of Mwamphashi applauds to the initiative by the\nKaronga Diocese saying, \u201cIt has come to empower the community economically\u201d unlike\nin the past when they could carry their produce to a bordering country Tanzania\nwith no say on the price offered by traders.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collective marketing has proved its goodness to farmers in\nT\/A Mwabulambia who for the past years have suffered a lot when accessing\nagro-markets such that their only choice was Isongole in Tanzania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many farmers have been victimized with tricky traders where\nmost available markets are marred with intermediate traders who offer below standard\nagricultural inputs and low prices for farm produce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With support from\nMISEREOR the Diocese of Karonga through its Development Desk is implementing a\n3 year Integrated Rural Development Project in Karonga and Chitipa districts. <em>Improving household economic level<\/em> is\none of the operational objectives, of which <em>Farmers\nCollective Markets <\/em>is a leading indicator.\n\nThe project is targeting a population of 2,400 households in 4\ntraditional areas of Kyungu in Karonga, Mwenemisuku, Mwabulambia, and\nMwenewenya in Chitipa.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Saloom Longwe Ownex Mwamphashi aged 38, living with a family of 7 members including his wife and 5 children, hails from Mugalure Village, T\/A Mwabulambia in Chitipa district.
