{"id":638,"date":"2018-02-12T08:50:59","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T08:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.karongadiocese.org\/?p=638"},"modified":"2018-02-12T08:50:59","modified_gmt":"2018-02-12T08:50:59","slug":"kaseye-girls-shine-mawu-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/index.php\/kaseye-girls-shine-mawu-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaseye Girls Shine in MAWU Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lonely Mwandira (Methodology Advisor St Michael&#8217;s parish)<\/p>\n<p>It was all smiles when Twambilire Ng\u2019ambi was named the overall winner in the Malawi Writer\u2019s Union (MAWU) Northern Chapter short story writing competition for secondary school students.<\/p>\n<p>The competition was organized by the union as part of its efforts in promoting reading and writing culture in the country. Speaking during the ceremony hosted by Mzuzu University (Mzuni), chairperson of the organizing committee, Mashallo Samilo, expressed concern over the dwindling interest in creative writing in the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_640\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-640\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.karongadiocese.org\/2018\/02\/12\/kaseye-girls-shine-mawu-awards\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-640 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Twambirire-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Twambirire Ng'ambi MAWU Awards Star\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Twambirire-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Twambirire-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Twambirire-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.karongadiocese.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Twambirire.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Twambirire Ng&#8217;ambi MAWU Awards Star<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt is a concern that this is the status quo despite an enabling environment for writers since multiparty democracy,\u201d he said. Samilo said this is one of the reasons MAWU sought sponsorship to conduct the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>A Better World, <\/em>is well written story. It gives insight into the central character\u2019s troubled mind with such honesty that one can relate with her and her abusive past,\u201d said Wesley Macheso in praise of the winning story. Macheso is a lecture in literature and creative writing at Mzuzu University.<\/p>\n<p>The story writing competition was sponsored by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to the tune of K150 000.00.<\/p>\n<p>The event was graced by Mzuzu City Council Deputy Mayor Alexander Mwakikunga, who encouraged students to write and read more to improve themselves and the world around them.<\/p>\n<p>Twambilire went away with MAWU certificate of recognition, copy of Wesley Macheso\u2019s young adult novel, and cash prize worth Forty Thousand Kwacha. The second prize winner was Chisomo Katchere from Mzuzu Government Secondary School and the third prize went to Tamika Chavinda from Mzuzu International Academy.<\/p>\n<p>The young star from Kaseye is in form three, her dream is to shake shoulders with lecturers at College of Medicine where she desires to be a neurosurgeon.
