“God will guide us, and He will not abandon His people,” said Bishop Martin Anwel Mtumbuka as the Diocese of Karonga joyfully celebrated its 15th Anniversary at St. Joseph Cathedral Parish.
The anniversary thanksgiving Mass brought together clergy, religious, lay leaders, and the faithful from across the Diocese to reflect on the journey of grace that began in 2010 when the Diocese was created by Pope Benedict XVI.

In his message, Bishop Mtumbuka encouraged Christians to remain hopeful and united as the Diocese continues to grow spiritually and numerically.
“Yes, we have a shortage of priests, but this should not make us afraid. Our faith assures us that God continues to guide His Church,” he said. “We remain grateful for the blessings we have received over these 15 years.”

From its beginning with about 21,000 Catholics, the Diocese now serves close to 70,000 members, a sign of strong evangelization, vibrant parishes, and growing participation of the faithful.
Speaking in an interview, the vice chair of the Laity council of the Diocese Frolence Chunda Kayange expressed gratitude for the progress made and acknowledged the increased responsibilities placed on the clergy due to the growth in membership.

“Our Diocese is growing, and this is a blessing. Even though many parishes have one priest, we continue to work together as one family of God,” she said.
The celebration also recognized and celebrated the dedication of staff, departments, and institutions that have contributed to the mission of the Diocese. Awards were presented to outstanding individuals and teams whose commitment has supported pastoral work, development initiatives, and administrative excellence.

Another major highlight of the anniversary was the successful fundraising effort where the Diocese raised over K100 million, surpassing its target of K70 million. This achievement demonstrates the strong unity, generosity, and shared vision of the Christian community.
As the Diocese looks to the future, the anniversary served as a reminder of God’s continued presence and the collective responsibility to strengthen vocations, expand pastoral and social development services, and deepen faith.
